When people talk about sensory processing and autism, they often picture a child covering their ears because a room is too loud or becoming overwhelmed by bright lights.
But sensory processing differences can be much more varied than simply being sensitive to noise or touch.
A study from Thomas Jefferson University suggests that looking more closely at how autistic children process sensory information may reveal challenges that aren’t obvious from everyday observation alone.
For parents, this is an important reminder: sensory differences don’t always look the way we expect them to.
What Did the Study Look At?
Researchers studied 93 children between the ages of 5 and 9 who had a confirmed autism diagnosis. Rather than relying only on information provided by caregivers, trained occupational therapists used standardized assessments developed by A. Jean Ayres to evaluate different aspects of sensory integration.
The assessments looked at how children processed information involving:
- Sight
- Sound
- Touch
- Body position
- Balance
- Motor tasks that require sensory information to be integrated
The researchers wanted to find out whether these more detailed sensory assessments could provide information that isn’t captured by standard autism assessments.
Sensory Processing Is More Than Being Overwhelmed
One of the most important points from the study is that sensory processing difficulties aren’t limited to reactivity.
Reactivity refers to becoming overly sensitive or overwhelmed by sensory experiences, such as loud or busy environments. While this can be an important sensory feature for some autistic people, the researchers looked at a much broader range of sensory integration abilities.
Some children in the study had difficulties with touch perception or balance. Others experienced challenges involving motor planning or motor skills, and some had difficulties in multiple areas.
This means a child can have sensory processing difficulties even if they don’t appear particularly bothered by loud noises or certain textures.
A Child Doesn’t Have to Look “Sensory Sensitive”
This may be one of the most useful takeaways for parents.
A child might not cover their ears, avoid certain clothes or become visibly overwhelmed by sensory input. Yet they could still have difficulty interpreting sensory information.
The researchers gave an example of a young girl who didn’t show obvious discomfort with loud classrooms or touch. However, she had difficulty with everyday skills such as buttoning clothes, tying shoes and holding a pencil to write. Further testing identified substantial difficulties with her ability to perceive differences through touch.
In her case, the sensory difficulty wasn’t obvious from simply watching how she reacted to her environment.
Why Touch Perception Matters
Think about reaching into a bag without looking and trying to identify an object using only your fingers.
Your brain needs to interpret information coming from your sense of touch so you can figure out what you’re holding.
The researchers found that some children had difficulties with this type of tactile perception. In the example described by the researchers, the child had difficulty distinguishing between objects with very different textures and physical characteristics through touch.
That kind of difficulty can affect activities that require a child to use information from their hands to guide movement.

Sensory Difficulties Can Affect Motor Skills
The study also found that sensory integration difficulties could involve motor planning and motor skills.
For parents, this may help explain why a child can seem to understand what they are supposed to do but still struggle to carry out certain physical tasks.
Activities such as getting dressed, writing, using tools or completing other coordinated movements require the brain to process information from the body and environment while planning and carrying out movement.
When sensory processing and motor skills don’t work together smoothly, everyday tasks can become much harder.
What Made This Study Interesting?
The researchers compared the sensory assessment results with information from standard autism diagnostic tests.
They found little overlap between the sensory assessment findings and the current autism diagnostic tests.
The researchers interpreted this as evidence that detailed sensory integration assessments can provide additional information that isn’t necessarily captured during a standard autism evaluation.
That doesn’t mean every autistic child needs the same assessment or that sensory integration testing replaces an autism evaluation.
Instead, it suggests that looking at sensory processing more comprehensively may help identify areas that deserve attention.
What Does This Mean for Parents?
If your autistic child struggles with everyday activities, it can be helpful to look beyond obvious sensory reactions.
You might notice things such as:
- Difficulty with handwriting
- Trouble learning to button or zip clothing
- Challenges with dressing
- Difficulty coordinating movements
- Problems with balance
- Difficulty using information from touch
- Challenges with motor planning
These difficulties don’t automatically mean a child has a sensory processing problem. But if you’re seeing persistent challenges, they may be worth discussing with the professionals who work with your child.
Why Individualized Support Matters
Every autistic child has their own combination of strengths and challenges.
The children in this study did not all have the same sensory difficulties. Some had problems in particular areas, while others had difficulties across multiple areas.
That makes individualized assessment important.
Instead of assuming that every autistic child needs the same sensory strategies, understanding where a child’s specific difficulties occur can provide more useful information for planning support.
What About Occupational Therapy?
The study’s findings are particularly relevant to occupational therapy because the assessments were administered by trained occupational therapists and focused on sensory integration and functional abilities.
The researchers suggested that more detailed sensory assessment could help therapists identify areas to consider when developing therapeutic activities.
The study also discusses Ayres Sensory Integration®, an occupational therapy approach designed to address sensory integration difficulties. The researchers noted that a newer assessment called the Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration® (EASI) had been developed with international norms and a broader age range.
Parents should keep in mind that this study was examining sensory assessment and its potential usefulness; it wasn’t a study showing that a particular therapy works for every autistic child.
The Bigger Picture of Sensory Processing in Autism
One of the most valuable lessons from this research is that sensory processing shouldn’t be reduced to the question, “Is my child sensitive to noise?”
Sensory processing involves many different abilities.
A child may have difficulty processing touch, balance, body position or sensory information needed for movement without displaying the obvious sensory reactions that many people associate with autism.
Looking at the broader picture may help parents and professionals understand why certain everyday activities are challenging.
Final Thoughts
This study provides a helpful reminder that sensory processing in autistic children can be complicated and highly individual. The 93 children studied showed difficulties across a variety of sensory integration areas, including touch, balance, motor planning and motor skills.
For parents, the takeaway isn’t to look for a particular sensory “symptom.” Instead, pay attention to the everyday tasks your child finds difficult and consider whether sensory processing could be one piece of the puzzle.
Sometimes, the most important sensory difference isn’t the one that gets the most attention—it’s the one that makes an everyday task unexpectedly hard.
