We encountered a horrible spell of mis-medications… enduring terrible side effects of 4 different ADHD medications before the DR declared that IF none of these work on him then he is NOT ADHD… please be so very careful which labels the community and even the doctorial leaders put on your child!… my son has numerous sensory issues… and there is NOT medication to treat his symptoms!

Thanks for sharing your story, Tara. SPD is often misdiagnosed by ADHD by well-meaning physicians. It’s important for parents to be a strong advocate for their children.

America Association of Paediatrics do not recognise it, the DSM V didn’t accept it and the British Association of Occupational Therapy has advised OTs not to diagnose it…. Yet it’s all over the internet as if it has recognition and scientific validity. There is definitely a lot of disorder when it comes to Sensory Processing but it’s not the kids who need the labels.

Until the 80s, Autism was marked as schizophrenia and not recognized for what it is. The medical community will catch up. As the scientific community starts research, initial findings have definitely found a biological basis for SPD: https://www.thesensoryspectrum.com/breakthrough-study-reveals-biological-basis-for-sensory-processing-disorders-in-kids/
